Greek (Greek ????????, IPA /– "Hellenic") constitutes its own branch of the Indo-European languages. It has a documented history of 3,500 years, the longest of any Indo-European language. It is spoken by 15 million people primarily in Greece and Cyprus, but also in many Greek emigrant communities around the world including Albania, Armenia, Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, Egypt, France, Georgia, Germany, Italy, Turkey and the USA.
Greek is written in the Greek alphabet, the first true alphabet (as opposed to an abjad or abugida) and the ancestor of both the Latin and the Cyrillic alphabets
Greek is the official language of the Greece where it is spoken by about 98.5% of the population. It is also, alongside Turkish, the official language of the Republic of Cyprus .

Greek, on the other hand, shows the difference by changing the endings of its words. You will be learning the different endings during the course. But for the moment, let us use English letters and say that, if the Athenians are the subject (i. e. if they are doing the defeating) they are Athenai-oi, while if they are the object (i.e. if the enemy are defeating them) they are Athenai-ous.

Translation
In the beginning God created heaven and earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep water. The spirit of God was hovering over the water. Then God said, "Let there be light!" So there was light. God saw the light was good. So God separated the light from the darkness. God named the light "day", and the darkness he named "night". There was evening, then morning, the first day. Then God said, "Let there be a horizon in the middle of the water in order to separate the water". So God made the horizon and separated the water above and below the horizon. And so it was. God named what was above the horizon "sky". There was evening, then morning, a second day.
