Portuguese (portugu) is a Romance language predominantly spoken in Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, and East Timor. With more than 200 million native speakers, Portuguese is one of the few languages spoken in such widely-distributed parts of the world, and is the fifth or sixth most-spoken first language in the world. Since Brazil, with 172,000,000 inhabitants, has about 51% of South America's population, Portuguese is the most widely spoken language in South America.

The language was spread worldwide in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries as Portugal created the first and the longest lived modern-world colonial and commercial empire (1415–1975), spanning from Brazil in the Americas to Macau in China. As a result, Portuguese is now the official language of several independent countries and is widely spoken or studied as a second language in many others. There are still more than 20 Portuguese Creole languages. In Brazil one will find different accents from one region to other (like english in the USA). It is an important minority language in Andorra, Luxembourg and Namibia. Large Portuguese-speaking immigrant communities exist in many cities around the world, including Paris in France and Boston, New Bedford, Cape Cod, and Newark in the United States.

Portuguese is nicknamed A la de Cam ?/i> ("The language of Cam ?, after The Lusiad); A ?a flor do L?o ("The last flower of Latium "). Portuguese language speakers are known as Lusitanic or Lusophones.

PORTUGUESE
The Portuguese language evolved from the Vulgar Latin (see also Latin language), spoken on the west coast of the Iberian Peninsula, in the Roman provinces (see Rome) of Lusitania and Gallaecia (now Portugal and the Spanish province of Galicia). When the Romans invaded the peninsula in 218 B.C., the people living in the region adopted the vulgar or common Latin, the Romans' colloquial language. A further stage in the linguistic development was the Romance, a language representing an intermediate stage between vulgar Latin and modern West Romance languages, which include Portuguese, Spanish, French, Galician and Occitan.

From 409 AD to 711, the Portuguese vocabulary adopted many new words used by invading Germanic tribes (see Germanic languages). Among these were roubar (to steal), guerrear (to wage war), and branco (white). The effects of the Germanic migrations on the spoken language was not uniform and broke the linguistic uniformity of the peninsula. Over a period of time, this rupture led to a differentiation of the regional languages.

Beginning in 711, when the Moors conquered the Iberian Peninsula, Arabic became the official language, although the vast majority of the population continued to speak Romance. Arabic words that entered the Portuguese language during the Moor occupation included arroz (rice), alface (lettuce), alicate (pliers), and refém (hostage).
